Sustainable and Beautiful Living:
Kompassquartier in Bruchsal Realised with Aluminium Systems from WICONA
The new Kompassquartier Bahnstadt has been completed in Bruchsal, near Karlsruhe. Designed by Hamburg-based architecture firm Peter + Paschen GmbH, this mixed-use residential and commercial development offers forward-looking living spaces for all generations and was constructed to the KfW 55 efficiency standard. The façades of the new buildings feature sustainable aluminium systems by WICONA.
Space for Sustainable and Future-Ready Living
As a flagship urban development project for the city of Bruchsal, Kompassquartier Bahnstadt comprises eight new buildings with a total of 126 residential units across up to six storeys. These range from compact one-bedroom apartments to family homes with gardens, age-friendly serviced flats, and high-end penthouses. The development also includes a central, park-like communal square, underground parking, a café, and co-working spaces for residents. Situated on a 10,000 m² site close to the town centre, the quarter offers ideal conditions for a sustainable and individual lifestyle across all age groups. Sustainability was a key focus in the planning: the neighbourhood features an innovative energy concept, and all buildings meet the KfW 55 energy-efficiency standard.
Façade Design with Visual Appeal and Thermal Performance
The buildings – designed in various formats including point blocks, rows, and closed blocks – are defined by their façade treatment. The architects at Peter + Paschen developed a design featuring horizontal bands of white fine render combined with coloured textured plaster in the window reveals, creating a unifying visual identity. Balconies and loggias further structure the façades and highlight different visual axes and building orientations.
For the window elements, the planners chose WICONA’s highly thermally insulated WICLINE 75 TOP system. It combines the slimline appearance of a 75 mm window system with outstanding energy performance, achieving Uw values below 0.80 W/(m²K). In line with the project's comfort standards, the windows were custom-fitted with enhanced sound insulation and lockable opening restrictors.
Visually coordinated doors from the WICSTYLE 75 evo range were installed, along with WICSTYLE 77 FP fire protection doors where required. In commercial areas such as the café and co-working spaces, the façades were executed using the elegant WICTEC 60 stick system.
A Façade That Supports a Lower Carbon Footprint
The aluminium systems used in Kompassquartier Bahnstadt were manufactured using Hydro CIRCAL 75R – a sustainable aluminium alloy made with at least 75% recycled end-of-life aluminium, meaning aluminium scrap that has already completed a full product lifecycle.
Christian Britzelmayer, project consultant at WICONA, explains:
“Hydro CIRCAL 75R has a carbon footprint of just 1.9 kg CO₂ per kg of aluminium, making it perfectly suited to this project’s high sustainability goals. It enables substantial resource savings and significantly reduces carbon emissions.”
